Nurse, Interrupted: The Complacency Condition

Ah, nursing. The profession that’s equal parts rewarding and exasperating. Over the years, I’ve dipped my toes into nearly every setting you can imagine—medical/surgical, emergency room, ICU, home care, management, aesthetic medicine... and, of course, the world of “industry nursing.” Yes, I’ve spent years delivering pharmaceutical sales pitches to everyone from doctors to pharmacists to, well, anyone who would listen. It’s a colorful resume, to say the least.

Now, before you roll your eyes and think, “Oh great, here comes another nurse rant,” let me hit you with some numbers that are actually quite impressive. As of 2016, there were a whopping 3.2 million registered nurses (RNs) in the United States. That’s right, 3.2 million! And we proudly make up the largest chunk of the healthcare workforce in this country. Need more convincing? Americans trust nurses more than any other profession. In fact, when asked to rate the honesty and ethical standards of various careers, we came in first—not bad for a bunch of people who’ve spent decades wiping butts and dodging bodily fluids.

Here's another fun tidbit: back in 1970, men made up a mere 2.7% of the RN workforce. Fast forward to today, and that number has climbed to nearly 10%. Progress, right? It’s almost as if we’ve discovered that men can do more than just stand around and not faint during a code blue.

Despite these staggering statistics, one question keeps floating around in my head: Why doesn’t nursing have the same prestige or visibility as other professions? If you ask me, I think it’s complacency.

I’ve witnessed seasoned nurses who have been happily married to the same unit for 20 years—riding high on seniority perks like first dibs on vacation time and holidays. Sounds great, right? Well, many of them are also professionally miserable. So, I ask them: Is that extra vacation day really worth it if you're feeling stuck in a rut? Because let’s face it, nothing kills professional joy like the same old routine.

Nursing is not a one-size-fits-all profession. The good news is that we have endless opportunities. Sure, you can stick to the typical hospital gig, but there’s a whole world of non-traditional roles that might surprise you. Take me, for example—industry nursing. I didn’t even know this career path existed until I stumbled upon it. And it’s not just me—there are plenty of other nurses who are thriving in unusual (and frankly, fun) roles that go beyond the bedside.

Let me hit you with a few more sobering statistics to chew on:

  • 18% of hospital nurses experience depression.

  • One-third of nurses report burnout.

  • Half of all RNs seriously consider leaving the profession.

But here's the thing: we didn’t sign up for this profession just to make a paycheck and punch a clock. Most of us entered this field because we wanted to make a difference, even if that difference was just offering a comforting word or a steady hand in a crisis. If you’re reading this blog, chances are you’re still holding on to that spark of purpose.

So here’s my challenge to you, dear nurse: Take a good, hard look around. Do you see nurse bullying? Do you feel the crushing weight of burnout? Are you getting the respect and support you deserve from administration? For my advanced practice nurses out there, are you in a state where your autonomy is just a distant dream?

These problems are all too common in our field. But don’t let them dim your light. There is hope. Nursing doesn’t have to feel like a grind for the rest of your career. You are in control of your own fulfillment. So, don’t let complacency win. There’s a whole world of opportunities out there—go find your spark again and let it shine. Trust me, it’s worth it.
